There are a lot of different words and terms associated with Internet marketing. Here you will find 20 of the most common Internet marketing terms. These are helpful if you are new to the business or if you just want to have a quick list to refer to for reference.

Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing refers to using social media websites or services in your marketing campaign. Examples would be using Twitter, Facebook or YouTube to market your brand, affiliate products, services, blog or any other relevant information.
Content Marketing
Content marketing is simply creating and sharing good quality content. The hope with this strategy is that when a website or blog posts content that is really important, valuable or engaging, it will be shared with others. Sharing can then lead to an increase of website traffic, followers and becoming an authority figure in your industry.
Article Marketing
Article marketing is when a person creates content that is typically short in length, but still valuable; that pertains to their business or industry that they are in. These articles are then distributed to different websites, blogs and news organizations.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing relates to when a person markets another person’s or company’s products or services. This is commonly done through either linking to a product or service on another website through the use of text links, banner ads or ad blocks.
Direct Marketing
Direct marketing pretty much speaks for itself. It is marketing without using traditional advertising methods that reach more than one person at a time. Examples would be using fliers, letters and talking to a person one on one. In relation to the Internet, direct marketing can be done through chatting to people using chat programs or emails to name a couple. It is important to note however that spamming is not allowed and a person has to give permission for emails to be sent first.
Email Marketing
Email marketing as noted is a form of direct marketing. Internet users sign up for newsletters from the company or person and then they receive information via email from the company. Those who sign up can elect to opt out and stop receiving emails any time that they wish.
List Building
List building refers to building up a list of people to email market to.
Organic Search Results
These are website results that show up in the search engines without the use use of pay per click ads. The search engines all have different ranking systems so a website may appear in one position on one search engine and in a different position on another search engine.
PPC (pay per click)
PPC (pay per click) refers to the advertising method where the company or person places ads on search engines or websites that link back to their own blog or website. The advertiser only pays for these ads when another Internet user clicks on them.
Niche Marketing
Niche marketing refers to focusing on one specific product or service in an overall industry. For example, marketing information on one specific type of yoga would be considered niche marketing. It is used to reach targeted audiences rather than marketing to everyone.
Internet Marketing Software
Internet marketing software relates to any type of software or program; free or paid for that is used to serve a specific purpose in the marketer’s strategy. Niche finders, keyword tools, banner makers, blog plugins that show ads or software that tracks figures can all be considered Internet marketing software. There are several different types that serve many purposes.
Mass Marketing
Marketing to anyone and everyone through methods that will reach a lot of people at once.
Auto Responder
A program that automatically answers an email message that is sent to it. Often used in Internet marketing to verify when people sign up for something or receive information through email.
Banner Ads
A form of online advertising where a graphic or image is displayed (usually with text on it). When a banner ad is clicked, the Internet user is taken to the website that the banner displays information about.
Micro Website or Blog
A website or blog about one certain niche and nothing else.
Internet Trends
What Internet users are searching or looking for online when there is a spike or surge in searches for the particular topic.
Conversion Rate
The conversion rate relates to the number or percentage of visitors who take a particular action that the marketer wants them to take.
Link Building
Refers to the process of getting other websites to link to your website or blog (inbound links).
Domain or Domain Name
The letters, numbers or a combination of both that are between the “www” and the ending prefix (.com,.net, .info etc) in a website’s address.
Blog/Blogging
Blogs and blogging have become widely used strategies in Internet marketing. Blogging refers to the process of writing and keeping an online journal. It has turned into a popular platform for sharing information about anything and everything.

Great little dictionary of terms that are most common to be used in internet marketing. We usually know what they are, however, if we were asked to explain them in a few words, we would probably have troubles doing so. That’s why this is a great reminder for clearing up a few terms.
